Match Day Preview | End of season 2022/23
Match day vs Aberystwyth at home, last game of the season...
By Eloise Martin
The Dragons face one more test before they can get their hands on the Conference Plate this Sunday as they face Aberystwyth at USW Sport Park, kicking off at 14:00. The Dragons have beaten Aberystwyth 2-1 in all of their previous meetings this season and it is always a feisty game when the sides meet!
Most recently, Carys Bufton’s 88th-minute winner away at Park Avenue in January was certainly one to remember! Wales youth international Olivia Francis has also produced goals on every one of the occasions the teams have met so far.
Last week’s game against Barry Town United secured the Conference Plate for the Dragons with a 1-1 draw thanks to Alison Witts’ equaliser. With the closing game tomorrow there is a lot to reflect on! It has been a long season with plenty of highs and lows after narrowly missing out on a spot in the top four by a singular goal at the end of the first phase. Despite this, the team have fought on courageously and they remain unbeaten in phase two picking up 11 points so far meaning the Dragons are four points clear at the top of the table!
Having only taken over at the beginning of the season it has been a successful run for James Fishlock. The Dragons have only lost seven out of the 19 games in league action with eight wins and four draws and have scored a mighty total of 32 goals! The team are also one of only three teams to take points off league winners Cardiff City after Renee Day scored in the 91st minute. Following the success, James is here to stay and recently extended his contract meaning he will be leading the Dragons’ campaign next season.
Although it is not over quite yet it has been a season to remember with the Dragon family closer than ever and they will be sure to put on a performance on Sunday in the hope of ending on a high!
